I am very proud to release the first LP I produced and recorded in my Albuquerque studio in 1962/63.  People inquire about this recording from time to time and I recently listened to the one pristine vinyl recording I was lucky to still have.  I am amazed at the quality and sound because it was captured on the most archaic equipment during my very shaky years as a would be recording engineer!  This presentation of “Not Just Jazz” has not been enhanced by any processing other than pop and click removal and level adjustment.  The sound, equalization and dynamics are exactly what you would hear from the production vinyl on a quality record player.  I can not recall every detail of the recording, but here is what I believe was used to capture this great performance by these great Albuquerque musicians.

I used a Bogen 5 channel mono tube mixer and connected it to a 4-channel Ampex tube mixer to get a stereo output.   I had a natural reverb setup in the concrete entrance hall of my brother’s dental office and that gave me a reverb ambiance and the slight effect of stereo spectrum.  I had no compressors and the only EQ available to me I believe, was a master EQ on the Bogen mixer.  I do believe I had one condenser Altec microphone and the rest of the mikes would be Shure and Electro Voice dynamics.  I most likely used a 1/4 track Sony home tape recorder, or a Magnecorder….can’t remember. The project was distributed in New Mexico by Sandy Kahn and hopefully the musicians would also sell copies at their gigs.  Well, none of that worked out and I believe most of the records were sold as cutouts and I kept some and shelved the project …...until now...50years later!

This is fun recording by some of the finest musicians to touch the Albuquerque jazz scene and produced by a very green rocker from Clovis.   What more could you want?
